More than anything else, I help people through divorce. It is rarely just a legal event — it touches your home, your finances, and, when there are children involved, your time with them. Some divorces are straightforward and largely agreed; others are contested and complicated by property, a family business, or disputes over the children. I represent clients on both ends of that spectrum across Northeast Kansas.

How divorce works in Kansas

Kansas requires that at least one spouse has lived in the state for 60 days before a divorce can be filed. The case is filed in the district court of the county where you live, and most Kansas divorces proceed on the no-fault ground of incompatibility — you do not have to prove wrongdoing. There is also a short waiting period after filing before the court can finalize the divorce.

Along the way, the court addresses the issues that actually shape your life afterward:

• Division of property and debts (Kansas divides these equitably)
• Spousal support (maintenance), where appropriate
• Custody, parenting time, and child support when children are involved
• What happens to the marital home, retirement, and a family business
